Goal Making for Success

How to make goals in a way that helps you accomplish them.

On of my colleagues I have a lot of respect for, gave me some life changing advice today I have to share.

It all started with me making fun of  him and his excessive use of whiteboards and lists. He stops me after a few minutes of my jests and asks if I wan’t some life advice. I am ALL about life advice and life stories. He started his life changing advice with “If someone had told me what I am about to tell you, when I was your age, I would be so much further along than what I am now.” Of course this piqued my interest. The rest of this article will be my summary of this life changing advice he gave me.

First Step

Divide your goals into 3 categories.

  1. Business
  2. Personal
  3. “Shit you want but don’t need”

You can start with a notebook, a whiteboard, or some kind of electronic document you can refer back to regularly. I would recommend grabbing a notebook and putting one goal on each page.

Categorize your goals into these categories.

Business: This relates to work life. Ask yourself questions like, “Where do you see yourself in a year? 5 years? 10 years? 15? 20? 25? 30?” “Where do you see your salary being in those time frames?” “Do you want to be working at 75?” “When are you planning on retiring?” Obviously everyone wants to be a millionaire. And the millionaires want to be Billionaires. Go ahead, put that goal down. But also make sure you are listing down plenty of obtainable goals in your career.

Personal: This relates to health, family life, spiritual life, the type of individual you are etc. To find the goals you want this category ask yourself questions like “Is my health where I want it to be?” “Am I the kind of parent I want to be?” “Am I the type of friend I would want to be a friend with?” List down the Ideal body weight you want to be. List down traits you want to see in yourself. List down everything that you want to become in life.

“Shit you want but don’t need”: This one is pretty simple. If you wan’t a huge vacation, or a new car, a four wheeler, snowmobiles, a new couch, headphones, etc.

Step 2

How are you going to accomplish all these goals? Now that you have a goal per page, this is where you write out all possible ways you think you can accomplish these things. You want to be a millionaire? I would make my first item “research how to become a millionaire” This will wield many more ideas and results. This is why I recommend a separate page for each goal. Write down what you learn. If you learn another 50 things, write them all down. Go through each goal and start this process adding as many steps as you think it takes to accomplish the goal.

Done. Great! Move on to the next step!

Step 3

Read through your goals. All of them. I would then index them on a separate page. Put them in whatever order you deem most important to less important. Or list them from the easiest to the hardest to accomplish. Or make several lists and break them up in a couple of different ways that you think is easiest to track and accomplish.

Step 4

Just do it.

Set 30 minutes a day to starting on your list. Look at your prioritized index. Turn to that page and start plugging through the items. You get done with that goal, cross it off, move on. You hit a roadblock with that goal? Highlight it, box it, mark it some how, some way, and start on the next one. Having this list readily available to reference so that anytime you have a few extra minutes, peek through and see if there is something you can do.

As you accomplish these goals, you should feel a little bit of empowerment. You spend so long wanting something when you finally succeed it will light the fire under you and you will do everything you can to pound out all your goals. And the more you get going, the more goals you will make, and the more goals you will crush, and this process will repeat, and repeat itself over, and over again, until hopefully, one day, you get to a point where you are content and happy with where you are at in life.
