The future can be a scary thing. No one ever knows just what will be coming their way. There are infinite possibilities of what you do from day to day that can change the outcome of the next hour, year, or even decade! Something as simple as calling the right person at a certain time could get your foot in the door to a new position, or opportunity.
My favorite thing to do, is to sit down with someone and ask, “What are you doing with your life?” “Where do you want to be?” “Where do you want to be in 5-10-40 years?” Quite a few people have an exact idea of what they want, My wife is one of them. Before we seriously started dating she had a plan, a very good plan. She had mapped out the next 20 years of what she wanted. I had a more basic 10 year plan, and after marriage, that all changed. She chose an entirely different degree and career path, and my career stayed in the same industry, but took a turn I would have never expected.
Obviously our plans didn’t come true. Not even close. But in place of those fallen goals, we replaced them with new goals We now have a dynamic future 50 years planned out. It isn’t bulletproof, not one bit. It is a direction forward. It’s one step in front of the other.
My wife and I talked to an individual the other night, asking about their goals, future plans, dreams and aspirations. This individual didn’t really know what they wanted. They had a high end career position they wanted, and they knew where they wanted to go to school, but when I asked this individual about how they’ll go about getting to their dream job, I was shocked to hear that they had no clue on how to get there. This is something I see so often, someone wants to move up in a company, or someone wants to be in a higher position of power, but when you ask them what they are going to get there, you get crickets. They have no idea what it may take to get to where they want to be. They are not actively working towards the thing they say they want the most.
Whilst my goals have changed a lot recently, I have already gone through the new process of what I want now. My current goal job is to be a Project Manager. From there I broke it down to a series of steps and or qualifications. A good PM should have a construction degree. For that reason I am enrolled in a Construction Management Program at a recognized college. I know that the best project managers I have met, have experience in construction. I am working in the construction feild to gain experience. It isn’t easy, it isn’t always fun, but I am learning a mass amount of information. I also know that PM’s generally have had experience as a Project Engineer. For that reason, I am pursuing a Project engineer degree as hard as I possibly can.
Knowing where I want to be tomorrow, gives me focus for today. Time flies quick, and I don’t want to waste a single day moving forward. Even if you sit there and think, I am happy with my life and where I am at, I garuntee that you can improve in something, even if it is some personal growth. And if you really are perfect in every way, please send me an email and let me know your secret!!!
Think about where you want to be in life, what you want to do, who want to be. Once you have that figured out, work backwards, work all the way back to where are now, making a list of everything you need to do, and start moving forward. Start making improvements, phonecalls, the right emails. The first step is just knowing what you want.
Sorry it has been such a long time since I have posted anything, I hope you all enjoy!
